Pukai is a very outgoing and cheerful person, someone that is usually looking at the brighter half of life. He is almost always positive, even to the point where he is being unintentionally obnoxious or aggressively optimistic. Even with his near infinite positivity, he doesn't speak all that much, granted it's near impossible to speak when your innards are out of your mouth most of the time. If he's ever bothered or upset, it's pretty easy to flip his mood back and get him to forget what he was even upset about in the first place. He loves to smile and make others smile, though he has gotten into a few sticky situations where the person he was cheering up didn't want to be cheered up in the slightest.
Pukai isn't the best at noticing big things, he often misses a tense atmosphere and just completely walks into danger when it is plainly obvious. His lack of attention for big issues is caused by his attention to small things with no relevance to whatever situation is happening. He can walk into a room and notice a hole in the opposite wall before the dead body in the middle of the floor. Even after he notices the corpse, Pukai will get distracted by all the knickknacks in the room before he realizes he should go report the dead body, and then he'll see all sorts of things on the way and take a few more hours than he should have to report the poor corpse.
Being born without arms has serious drawbacks on things like balance. Pukai, being the wonderfully distracted boy he is, will trip over everything, including air, because he just will not watch the ground in front of him. He will also run into everything and everyone, spilling things, knocking people over, falling on his butt, if he's not watching where he's going calamity will ensue. The boy has probably impaled himself before, thankfully he has Recover, otherwise he would be dead. Pukai's extreme klutziness has caused him to run into the wrong people and put him into dangerous situations. Once he is aware of what's going on around him (which usually happens when someone throws a punch or he gets attacked by some feral), he is quick to put up a defensive front. His sturdiness and high defenses have usually helped him out of most fights by tanking hits and throwing them back. Pukai rarely gets defensive for himself unless he is in danger, but the second he notices someone he's close to in danger, he will not hesitate to fight and get himself hurt defending someone else.
Overall Pukai is an assertive person that will become aggressive when push comes to shove.

Pukai and his twin brother Kekola, a Corsola, were born to Oceanographers Ahe and Kaipo Shirley. Because their parents were researchers and often had to go on trips, they left Pukai and Kekola with their close friends Richard and Aneria Cullish, and their daughter Selkie whom was only two days older than the twins. For the first four years of their life, Pukai and Kekola were taught and raised by both their biological parents, when they weren't off researching, and their god parents. The twins often traveled between the homes, learning sciences and important things about the ocean with their biological parents, and the standard reading, writing, and basic maths from their god parents. Despite the job their parents had, the twins were never enrolled into school, because both families felt it would be best to learn good morals and scholarly stuff at home and not have to deal with the problems of bullying or stress from too much homework. The schooling they received from both sets of parents was basic, but it was enough to help them in society. Because they had little schoolwork to do, the boys often helped around the house, helped their parents file and sort information they gathered, and would go fishing with Richard to help him out when their parents were gone.
One day after Pukai and Kekola's fifth birthday, their parents went off on their usual monthly research trip, and they were supposed to return after a week. Things were normal the first two days after they left, Pukai and Kekola played with their best friend Selkie while her parents watched, until a terrible storm came in, destroying the twin's home and damaging the Cullish's home. Pukai was oblivious to Aneria and Richard's panic as he and Selkie looked for seashells down on the beach after the storm passed, but Kekola was not. After two weeks, long past when their parents were supposed to come home, Kekola and Pukai recieved the news that their parents were killed in the storm, their bodies found by local sailors.
Both of the boys were heart broken, becoming very quiet and withdrawn from losing two of the most important people in their lives. Pukai would not eat for days on end and had to be coaxed into eating by Kekola and Selkie, he wouldn't speak at all to anyone as he just sat in his despair and sorrow. Kekola was a bit more open and emotional, often causing himself to dehydrate from crying too much, he had to be soaked in water for a day every time it happened. The twins were eventually consoled and adopted by the Cullish family. They kept their original last names and, after a few more months of recovering, became very happy living with their new adopted family. They still have habits from when they were grieving, Pukai never talked as much as he used to, and Kekola is still very emotional.
When the boys got older, they became more interested in becoming stronger and would train with eachother on the beach with their adopted father supervising. When they were 14, an accident occurred during one of their little spars. Kekola had been particularly moody that day, and got extremely frustrated with his brother before the training. In his frustration, he used Nature Power, a move he had recently learned and was still trying to control. Because Kekola still didn't have a good control on his move, it got out of control and hit Pukai much harder than it was supposed to. The force of the attack sent the poor Pyukumuku flying into a boulder on the beach, knocking Pukai unconcious when his head hit the hard surface. The event gave Pukai a concussion, and he cannot remember the events around that time. Kekola was traumatized by the incident and has blatantly refused to fight or battle ever since.
The next five years of the twins' lives were uneventful other than the occasional big storm that rolled through, up until the Apocalypse occured. When the big event happened, Pukai was at home with his sister Selkie, now a Primarina like her mother, their parents and Kekola were off on a business trip on Sapphire Island. Pukai was inside, sorting through a stash of candy he had, completely unaware of what was happening in the skies up above. Selkie came inside in a panic. She grabbed Pukai, whom was startled and confused and took him to the cliff near their home to hide in the disaster shelter the Cullish's had built many years ago as shelter from hurricanes and tsunamis. They were relatively safe, rain and high winds battered the walls, but the shelter kept Pukai and his sister safe until everything died down.
The two went back to check on their home, only to find it completely destroyed. They gathered what they could carry, making several trips to get as much as they could, and moved all the salvageable resources and memorable items to the disaster shelter. Pukai and Selkie had no way of contacting their parents and Kekola to see if they survived, though Pukai refused to accept the worst and searched around Emerald Port for some way to contact his family. Eventually he heard about the guild in Everstone City and decided to join. He tried to convince Selkie to go with him, but she decided to stay at the shelter in case their family made it back to Emerald Port. The next day, Pukai headed out to go join the guild.
